The Funeral Rule does not cover cemeteries and mausoleums unless they sell both funeral goods and funeral services. When finding a cemetery, it’s important to understand not just funeral costs, but cemetery costs.
Planning questions to consider about the cemetery:
Cemetery plots can be expensive, especially in cities. In addition to the cost of the cemetery plot itself, many cemeteries require a grave liner, which can cost several hundred dollars.
Plus, it costs hundreds of dollars to open the grave for interment, along with additional charges to fill the grave. Perpetual care is sometimes included in the purchase price. If it’s not included, look for a separate endowment care fee for maintenance and grounds keeping. Clarify the maintenance issue before buying the site or service.
For a crypt – a mausoleum or columbarium – in addition to the cost of the crypt, there are also opening and closing fees and charges for endowment care and other services.
